QUANTUM COMPUTING WILL NEVER WORK BY JOHN RUSSELL

https://www.hpcwire.com/2018/11/27/quantum-computing-will-never-work/ Amid the gush of money and enthusiastic predictions being thrown at quantum computing comes a proposed cold shower in the form of an essay by physicist Mikhail Dyakonov published in IEEE Spectrum this month –  The Case Against Quantum Computing . Whatever your view of QC’s prospects, Dyakonov’s commentary is worth a read. Error correction – or more accurately the inability to monitor variables and correct errors at the scale required – is the big stumbling block, he writes, but there is a good deal more to his  piece . Sometimes it’s best to start with conclusions first. “To my mind, quantum computing researchers should still heed an admonition that IBM physicist Rolf Landauer made decades ago when the field heated up for the first time. He urged proponents of quantum computing to include in their publications a disclaimer along these lines: “This scheme, like all other schemes for quantum computation, relies o

Microsoft brings Office 2013 to Nigeria market

The global software giant, Microsoft has announced the availability of Office 2013 in Nigeria, the next iteration of the company’s flagship Office product line for consumers.  The new product allows new consumer cloud service works across devices to help busy people simplify their lives and get more done.  The new product, according to Microsoft was  designed to work with both touch and a mouse, and works seamlessly in the cloud giving the user an unmatched on- and offline experience.  “Office 2013 makes the end user more productive in both a work and home environment,”  Marc Israel, Office Division Group Lead for Microsoft West, East and Central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, said, adding that,  “With Office you can continue working offline, while the integration with cloud technologies allows you to sync your documents seamlessly allowing you to be far more productive.”  Cloud technologies, he explained are fast becoming part of everyday life, which is why Microsoft’s Office 365

Nigeria grabs excellence award at US Science, Engineering show

Nigeria’s representatives at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Phoenix, US last week clinched the United Technology Company (UTC) Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering. The duo of Duro-Aina Adebola and Zainab Bello from Doregos Private Academy Iyana Ipaja, Lagos invented a urine-powered generator to win the award and prize money of US$3000 in scholarship.  The award-winning invention seeks to provide affordable and sustainable energy sources as a solution to the epileptic power supply in developing countries without the attendant consequences caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.  According to the students’ teacher who supervised the invention and accompanied them on the trip, Mr Oluseyi Lawal, “the project works on the principle of electrolysis and energy conversion. It works like the conventional generator; the direct current output of the generator is connected to the urine electrolytic cell to ensure continuous production of the hydrog

Time now to embrace cloud computing, say EMC officials

AS cloud computing gains ground worldwide, Regional Manager for West Africa, EMC Corporation, Mr. Rasheed Jimoh, has argued that since Nigeria has automatically become the business hub of many local and international organisations, there could be no better time for the country to approach the cloud than now.  Jimoh was speaking at the first EMC Forum held in Lagos last week. EMC Corporation is a global company which enables businesses and service providers transform their operations and deliver information technology services efficiently. For him, if cloud is where to go, then Nigeria should be at the forefront of the journey.  “As the global IT community examines the tremendous benefits of big data, the efficacy of cloud computing, and the inherent security concerns, there is no better time than now to bring this same conversation to Nigeria. We have hosted the EMC Forum in several countries across the world and each time it has proven to be an effective platform for a convergence of

Another Nigerian designs road traffic mobile app  Another Nigerian designs road traffic mobile app   Necessity is the mother of invention. That could be a better way to describe new mobile developments in Nigeria today. Almost in quick successions, we have, for the past one year constantly featured Nigerians who invented innovative mobile applications, gadgets and devices out of the frustrations they have either experienced as Africans or observed being part of this continent.  jonnywaka-app  From social media sites to mobile devices, apps and tabs, the list of Nigerians joining the history books seems to be unending.  Just as we were celebrating a bamboo tablet from a Nigerian inventor on this page last week, we were also awaken, almost immediately after, with the info of another Nigerian, Dele Oluwole who has made good use of the chaotic traffic situation in Africa, particularly Nigeria to create an app.  Why this app Although, Oluwole said he has not been parmanent in the country

USB gets Condom against virus from public ports

USB gets Condom against virus from public ports   With the spate of flying viruses and nasty malware spread, it could be injurious to consciously insert your USB drive disks into any port. The implication is that it may easily be infected or you suffer “juice jacking”, which is when someone is able to steal your data through a public charging station.  But technology has a way of replicating true life conditions and practices in technological innovations. From adapting the computer system from human brain cells, a lot of technological innovations have followed the human path.  Now, apparently having seen the uses of condom in protecting humans against the dreaded  HIV virus, tech experts have designed condom for USBs to protect against virus infection or data theft.  The solution is coming from the stable of experimental security outfit called Int3.cc. Tagged the USBCondom, the product is a go-between device that creates a break between the data pins of the USB connector and those o

Twitter Founder Reveals Secret Formula for Getting Rich Online

Williams said, the internet is “a giant machine designed to give people what they want.” It’s not a utopia. It’s not magical. It’s simply an engine of convenience Ev Williams. Photo: Andrew White/WIRED Ev Williams has figured out the internet. That’s what he told the gathered tech heads at the recent XOXO conference in Portland, Oregon, and while he may have said this with tongue partly in cheek, he spent the next 30 minutes unloading his unified theory of the global computer network, an interpretation formed after 20 years of hard thinking — to say nothing of his experience creating seminal internet companies Blogger and Twitter. In his speech, Williams explained what the internet is, how it works, and how to get rich from it. Truth be told, Williams is not the best public speaker, but his message was clear: At a time when so many internet entrepreneurs are running around Silicon Valley trying to do something no one else has ever done, Williams believes that the r
